Oils 101- 10 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Using Essential Oils

Hello there! There are a few things that I have learned over the last few years by using Essential Oils(EO). The more I use them, the more I learn. In this post I will share some of the tips and tricks I have learned that I wish I knew when I first started using Essential Oils!

  1. First Rule- Do NOT put EOs in eyes or ears. Just don’t do it. Ever. Around your ear- good. Around your eye bone- good. Not inside.
  2. Plastic and Essential Oils don’t mix. If you want to add a drop of Lemon Vitality* EO (or any other vitality line EO) to your water or drink, it needs to be in a glass or stainless steel cup. You might say well…how come diffusers are made out of plastic then? Diffusers are made from a specific grade of plastic that will not deteriorate with Essential Oil use. Your average cup is not made from this quality of plastic. BPA free plastic doesn’t count. Don’t put your oils in those either.
  3. Start Low and Slow: When you just start out with using Essential Oils, start Slow (diluting them 50/50 with a Carrier Oil) and then apply the combo Low (to the bottoms of your feet).  Even though Essential Oils and Carrier Oils are both called oils, they are very different. A Carrier Oil is a fatty oil, not derived by the distillation process, and most people are familiar with them. You can find fatty oils in your kitchen- Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, etc. Carrier Oil Options to get you started:
  4. Don’t touch the top of the dropper. Skin cells and particles, called epithelials, will get inside the bottle and lower the effectiveness and frequency of the oil. Hold the dropper sideways until oil drops out. No need to shake the bottle to get oil out, you’ll just end up wasting your EOs! If you’re saying, “Wait a minute! What about roller bottles? Those touch your skin.” Yes they do! Make sure you make small batches of roller bottles that you will use within about a month. Clean your bottle and start over. You don’t have to do this….BUT try making a roller bottle out of clear glass one time and see how the color changes after a couple weeks. You will be able to see little floaties too, depending on the color of the essential oil. Perhaps then you’ll see my point. It’s like drinking the last of the water your toddler was just drinking out of…. Bleh.
  5. Always store your bottles right side up. This will prevent oil from leaking into the cap and causing them to stick. If you want a few oils in your purse I recommend getting a little soft case to carry them with you.
  6. Don’t over-tighten your bottles. If you’re storing bottles right side up you don’t need to worry about tightening tightly. This can cause the caps to break. Not good!
  7. Where to apply topically? It will depend on the EO you are using. Good places to start are:
    1. bottoms of your feet (look up vitaflex points)- any and all oils can be used in this way for any and all uses!
    2. tummy- apply in a clockwise motion for supporting your digestive system
    3. back of your neck and down the spine- great for sleeping or anything related to supporting your nervous system
    4. lymph nodes on your neck- great for supporting multiple systems including endocrine and immune
    5. wrists- similar to applying to neck area, I love to put oils I want to use aromatically on my wrist because I get whiffs of the oil throughout the day. Side Note- why do you think women put perfume on their neck and wrists? The perfume is absorbed into the circulatory system making you smell more like the perfume. Instead of using perfume in this way(it’s poison!), use your Essential Oils in this same way to, not only smell good, but have the essential oils absorb into your system! If you haven’t read one of my Ditch and Switch blog posts about ditching chemicals and switching to safer alternatives, it talks about how our skin is a sponge absorbing whatever we put on it. Check it out here!
  8. Start diffusing All The Time! Seriously. When first starting out you may not know what to use for everything. Diffusing everyday will give the benefits of Essential Oils to everyone in your home! Easy peasy.
  9. Keep reading about them and ask questions. Subscribe to this blog so we don’t loose touch and be informed about new educational blog posts just like this one! Education and sharing the oil love is a main goal on this blog. I always keep it real and try to avoid fluff you don’t need to know. Another great resource I always tell people is go follow The Human Body and Essential Oils on Facebook. Jen is a wealth of knowledge and many things I know I learned from her!
  10. And finally, just start using them! The more you use them, the more you’ll learn what you love. And then you’ll start ditching and switching products left and right!
*The Vitality line with Young Living are Essential Oils labeled for dietary use. Please, please read your label if you do not use Young Living. Not all oils are created equal and many state on the label do not consume or for external use only. Others even state not for topical use! Yikes. A Beginners Guide to Sun Salutations

Happy Friday! And Happy first ever Yoga Video to me! If you would like to learn how to do a sun salutation then check out my instructional video below.

When I first started yoga, teachers would say ‘go through your flow and meet in down dog’…..whaaaaaat. I had no idea. Once I learned what they were, sun salutations have been the base for my home practice. It builds strength AND you can learn to slowly build a flow surrounding sun salutations. As a brand new, just out of yoga teacher training student of yoga I still am working on creating flows that, well….flow. So these are helpful for me and I hope they are for you to!

Even as I have gained some strength, I still start out with this modified ‘beginner’ level sun salutation. Then as my body warms up, after three or four rounds of modified sun salutations, I start to move into more traditional sun salutations.

Remember, it isn’t about the end pose, it is about the process. Yoga is a practice, enjoy every moment.

In my diffuser for today’s practice I had Citrus Fresh. An uplifting and awakening scent for saluting the sun! For more Essential Oil fun, check out these blog posts on Essential Oils here and here!

Featured Oil of the Week: Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil! If you would like to find out some of the amazing uses of Lemon EO you have found the right place!

  • add one drop of Lemon Vitality* to your water for a refreshing, detoxifying kick (use only glass or stainless steel. I love my hydroflask for this reason!)
  • diffuse 3 drops of each: lemon, peppermint, and lavender to help support your respiratory system (whenever I vacuum my house, or whenever the seasons change, I make sure this blend is going!)
  • diffuse with a variety of other oils to help uplift your mood and cleanse the air. It goes great with anything! Some of my favorites to pair Lemon EO with are:

  • de-stick stuff! Apply a couple drops of Lemon EO to get stickers off of items. If you have ever washed a shirt with a sticker on it, gum in your kids hair, sticker on your nice wood floors…. Lemon EO to the rescue! (but not on plastic!! read below)
  • create a cleaning paste with Thieves Household cleaner, baking soda, and Lemon Essential Oil
  • drop a couple drops down your garbage disposal to de-stink
  • Yogi Tip- love warm lemon water in the morning? Try a drop of Lemon Vitality EO instead! It has all the benefits, if not more, that lemon juice has without any of the acidity! Save your enamel and use Lemon Essential Oil instead. Check out this post from the Young Living Blog here.
  • add one drop of Lemon Vitality EO to your favorite lemon recipes! (Think- Lemon Bars, Chicken Piccata, or Lemon Vinaigrette for salad)
  • add one drop of Lemon Vitality EO to your Sprite and Vodka, to your Lemonade and Vodka, to your Gin and Tonic, or any other beverages you would add a lemon squeeze to!
  • wash you strawberries or blueberries in a bowl of water and add one drop of Lemon Vitality. Cleaner fruit and helps it stay fresh longer!
  • use on clothes as a stain remover
  • create a blemish stick to help with oil production with Lemon and Carrot Seed EO
  • create a weight management capsule to support healthy weight. Start with one drop of each: Lemon, Peppermint, and Grapefruit Vitality EOs in a capsule. Take it twice a day. Increase slowly to a maximum of 3 drops of each. Take every day. Consistency is key with this one.

If you’re already a lover of Lemon Essential Oil, you must try Jade Lemon EO! It smells amazing and I love diffusing it. Definitely add it to your must have list.

  1. Tip – don’t put Lemon EO on plastic. Just don’t do it. If you are drinking the vitality line always use glass or stainless steel, never plastic. Don’t remove a sticker from plastic. Any natural items or surfaces will be fine.
  2. Tip – Lemon EO, along with other citrus EOs, has a degree of photosensitivity. This means you do not want to use Lemon EO before spending time in the sun. Even if you are using it internally this photosensitivity can still occur; it is not just if you put it on your skin. Please be aware of your own body and take responsibility for your health. Start slow with EOs. I drink Lemon EO all the time in my water and spend time in the sun. That is about one to two drops of a citrus EO in a day. I have never had a reaction in the sun because of my use of EOs.

Ditch and Switch: Bathroom Products

Ditch and switch is a health series on this blog revolving around making your home chemical free. I’ll be listing the products I have switched to with success!

We are exposed to hundreds of chemicals throughout our day and our bathroom products are extremely concerning because we put them on our skin! Our skin is like a sponge and most of those chemicals get drawn into your body. Yuck! In the hopes of limiting the amount of chemicals in my body I have slowly started ditching the chemical filled products and switching to alternatives. You can check out the last Ditch and Switch blog post here. I wrote about one of the main items in our bathrooms that are filled with chemicals: Makeup. If you want to find out some of the natural products I use please keep reading!

Coconut Oil: tons of uses! Have you been on Pinterest lately?

  • Use it as your shave cream! I have a little jar I keep filled with coconut oil in my shower to shave with. It works better than shave cream and there aren’t any harsh chemicals. My skin has never been more hydrated and soft. You might think that this is more expensive BUT if you think about how expensive that bottle of shave cream is…it evens out. Buy bulk coconut oil…use it for everything. I use a little glass jar but fair warning you might want to use plastic.
  • I use it in my deodorant recipe! LOVE it.
  • Hand cream/Foot cream- rough spots? Coconut oil to the rescue.
  • Use it as a carrier oil for Essential Oils.

Norwex Body Cloths: I use these to remove my eye makeup! They are amazing. Just get them damp, hold over your eye for 10 seconds, and then rub gently. Boom. No chemicals here and a reusable product! Wham bam.

Essential Oil Beauty Serum: An amazing Young Living  serum that has Cedarwood EO, Coconut oil, Avocado oil, Blue Cypress wood oil, Lavender EO, Myrrh EO, Clove flower bud oil, Wolfberry seed oil, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood EO, plus other great ingredients.

  • Add two to three drops in Argan Oil for my hair. Use less for shorter hair. I get complimented on how amazing my hair smells regularly.
  • I also use this in hair masks!
  • Add one drop in your moisturizer before bed.

Art Trio: Gentle Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturizer- all from Young Living. What they do have: Essential Oils! What they don’t have: Parabens, Synthetic colors, Fragrance, Phthalates, Triclosan, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), Formaldehyde, or Toluene! Read more on their blog here.

  • Gentle Foaming Cleanser: the name gives it away, this cleanser is very gentle, still does it’s job, and doesn’t dry your skin out. It feels amazing on my skin and smells so good!
  • Toner: I had no idea what I was missing before using this toner. I will never go without toner again.
  • Moisturizer: this light moisturizer does wonders without clogging my pores (on days when I am feeling a bit drier I add one or two drops of the Young Living Essential Oil Beauty Serum to my moisturizer)
  • Beauty Hint: I use it all 3 of these on my face, neck, upper back, chest, and shoulders. A little goes a long way and I don’t notice I have to reorder that much more frequently to do this. Besides, women spend literally hundreds of dollars on products with secrets to anti-aging. These products have EOs in them and are less pricey AND I use them all over. Boomski.

Toothpaste: Did you know fluoride, that thing your dentist and the government has been telling you since you were 5 that you need, is actually a neurotoxin? Google fluoride neurotoxin. In my opinion, I don’t want to use fluoride in my toothpaste or in my water. Feel free to not listen to me and make up your own mind. If you have the same reaction I did when I found this out, “WTF”. Then Young Living’s Aromabright toothpaste is for you. I love it! It doesn’t have a strong, weird taste that other natural toothpastes have. And I have had the best check ups in my life since using this toothpaste. Plus I floss more too.

If you’re interested in finding out what chemicals are lurking in your bathroom, I would suggest downloading the ThinkDirty App. It doesn’t have every single product but gives you a good idea about whats bad and what isn’t. Hashtag not an ad. I started scanning all my products and freaked. I slowly have been trading out all my products and wanted to share my successes. Hopefully this will make it easier for you to ditch and switch too!

Oils 101 – What are Essential Oils

Welcome to Oils 101! This will be another regularly occurring series on this blog where we will discuss how Essential Oils can add to your health and wellness! A question I get asked often is “What are essential oils?” More than ever before people are hearing the term essential oil. Essential oils are even available at your local stores. In this post I will be outlining what essential oils are and the grades of essentials oils.

Essential Oils 101
Essential Oils 101

Essential oils(EO) are tiny molecules that are found in plants and those molecules are extremely small and light. I would encourage you to look up essential oils and the blood brain barrier. You can check out this article by David Stewart, Ph.D.,R.A. by clicking here. With essential oils being extremely lightweight, they are categorized as volatile. This doesn’t mean they are going to explode. It means that because they are so lightweight they literally jump into the air. That is why when you open a bottle of EO you can smell it from across the room; the molecules are literally jumping into the air and you are breathing them in!

Essential oils move throughout a plants circulatory system and many people call essential oils the life blood of a plant. They are similar to how our blood, and the things it in, help to keep us healthy. Essential oils can have many different purposes within a single plant and essential oils differ from plant to plant. Some of the main purposes of essential oils are:

  • to attract pollinators
  • Allelopathy- preventing plant competitors from growing in the area
  • to defend themselves against insects and other animals
  • to protect themselves from microbes, bacteria, and fungi
Extraction

How essential oils are collected from plant materials and the part of the plant collected from varies from plant to plant. The 2 main ways EOs are extracted from plants are:

  • Steam Distilling: The most prevalent way EOs are extracted from plant material. EOs are extracted through highly controlled steam and pressure. The process Young Living uses is an exact science that varries based on the plant to ensure the most therapeutic grade EO is extracted.
  • Cold Pressing: Used for many of the citrus EOs by cold pressing the rind of the fruit in order to extract the essential oils. Cold pressing is essentially squeezing the EOs out of the rind. Citrus EO are not extracted from the pulp or juice.
Grades

There are 4 grades of EOs today:

  1. Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (pure, plant produced essential oils containing all desired therapeutic compounds)
  2. Natural Organic and Certified Essential Oils (may not contain any or just a few therapeutic compounds)
  3. Extended or Altered Essential Oils (fragrance grade)
  4. Nature Identical or Synthetic Essential Oils (created in a labaratory)

Chemists can synthetically copycat the constituents of a pure essential oils in a lab. These oils may even be labeled as 100% pure therapeutic essential oils. BUT there are no laws regulating the definitions behind those terms. “CPTG®: Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade” is actually a copyrighted trademark that is owned by a company and not an actual certification given by an outside quality review board. It is a marketing term owned by one company with the goal of making money. Another one is “Certified Pure PharmaGrade – CPPG™”. Let that sink in. There is no certification given by an outside quality review board for an essential oil company to put on their label 100% pure therapeutic grade. And no other oil company could use their exact trademark or copyright. That is why I listed two different ones here. One can’t use the other’s. That makes trusting companies much more difficult to do.

Essential oil health and wellness

Organic labels have some merit to them but not as much as you’d think. Young Living doesn’t put the Organic label on their products because it actually would be a down grade for them. The only way you can know for sure you are getting the best grade of oils is to see it with your own eyes. Seeing the seed the company puts in the ground to seeing the seal they place on the bottle. You can go to Young Living farms and experience the entire process. They aren’t diluting EOs to make extra dough. You can go see it with your own eyeballs. If you don’t believe me go see another company’s farm….oh wait, you can’t!

I also know they hold their standards extremely high and never cut corners because products go out of stock. If a company was operating solely to make money they would never, ever let a product go out of stock. Young Living has ethics, okay peeps. They would rather have a product go out of stock in order to ensure that their crops are sustainable and their therapeutic qualities are never compromised. That is the kind of company I trust and I find that no matter what industry most companies are not as transparent as Young Living is.

It is important you trust the company you use to uphold standards within their company, since no third party is currently doing it for them. If you are buying Essential Oils from your local health food store and your goal is to use them to increase your health, you won’t see good results. Synthetic and altered essential oils can be harmful to your body and health instead of beneficial. They aren’t any different than the chemical filled products you are trying to replace them with.

The main reason I use Young Living oils is because of the action they perform. They work. It is truly amazing. I use YL Essential Oils every single day to increase my health and wellness. I hope this summary helped you understand the basics of essential oils and why it is important to use a brand you trust! I’m not claiming to be all knowing either so research for yourself. And keep tuning back into this blog for more Essential Oil posts! You can subscribe so you don’t ever miss a post wink wink.

Ditch and Switch! Your Makeup Bag

Hello there! Today we have a ‘Ditch and Switch’ blog post. This will be another regularly occurring series on this blog where we discuss some of the chemicals in our homes and what to replace them with! This week our topic will be ‘Your Makeup Bag!’

About a year ago I took a class with one of my Facebook oil groups. It was all about chemicals in our homes and I was shocked at the information. I knew some things like harsh cleaners probably weren’t good for you and that’s why my mom used to yell “put gloves on!!” when she saw me cleaning the tub…. But I had no idea at the extent of horrible chemicals filling our homes and how readily available, with no warnings, these products are. Aisles upon aisles of chemical filled home, cleaning, and beauty products at our local stores. And no one (okay some people have known forever, but most of us) has any clue. That is where this series comes in!

Check out some ingredients that are most likely in your makeup bag:

TALC, PARABENS, PHTHALATES, BISMUTH, LEAD, MURCURY, FORMALDEHYDE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, TRICLOSAN

Some of the terms associated with these chemicals are carcinogen, short term toxicity, long term toxicity, linked to miscarriages, lung disease, liver and kidney cancer, and a whole mess of others depending on the chemical. And that is just a list of the most frequent chemicals that have gained some notice in the health world lately. There are literally thousands of chemicals in, not only your make up bag, but throughout your home. Many ingredients in makeup within the US are banned in European and other countries. I would encourage you to read the article below. The EWG(Environmental Working Group) is a great organization that helps keep us up to date on items like chemicals in our lives. This is not an ad peeps, I just like their info…. Hashtag not an ad.

http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/2004/06/15/exposures-add-up-survey-results/#.WZ3o0z6GO70

We are exposed to an astonishing number of chemicals everyday. (As for you scientists out there… I know everything is made up of chemicals. I am referring to harmful and/or man made chemicals when I write ‘chemical’ in this post.) Especially us women with our loads of bathroom products. Sorry I’m not sorry for taking over the bathroom honey…. 🙂 Depending on what article or study you go by we put between 100 to over 500 chemicals on our bodies everyday. We have shampoo, conditioner, shave cream, hair spray, face wash, toner, moisturizer, primer, eye cream, lotion, scrubs, and tons of different make up products all with their own unique slew of chemicals. That adds up fast. When I went to the Young Living Health and Wellness event here in Phoenix Haley, Jensen called this the chemical blender. We just throw all these different chemicals in our bodies, hit high speed, and hope for the best.

Okay, let me ask you this… Do you think your skin protects you from the world? If you said yes, you are right. That is what we grow up thinking. BUT our skin is also a sponge and much of what we put on it gets absorbed into our bodies. You wouldn’t think so but in some people’s opinion what you put on your skin is more important than what you put in your body. I think both are important.

When I found out about all these chemicals I had just started getting into beauty. Youtube opened up a whole new world of beauty products that I all of a sudden needed….me. the girl who never wears makeup… Anyways, I was super disappointed that all these beauty wonders were making my skin a toxic waste land. Then the clouds broke, the sun came out, and a rainbow appeared…. Young Living announced their Savvy Minerals line at the 2017 convention. Okay, that might have been a bit dramatic but that’s how it felt! Searching for non toxic beauty products that actually worked was ridiculous. I tried and failed. Nothing was 100% good for you and not one product worked for me.

Savvy Minerals is

  • formulated without talc, bismuth, parabens, phalates, petrochemiclas, or synthetic fragrances
  • ideal for sensitive skin
  • vegan friendly (the lip sticks and mascara have beeswax- everything else is vegan!)
  • not tested on animals (these last two are extremely important to me!)
  • made with mineral based ingredients
  • long lasting all day wear

When I tried the YL Savvy foundation I was in love. Not only is it 100% great for my body, it is easy to use and makes me feel fabulous. Confession- I am just not the get up an hour early to do my hair and makeup. I’m just not. That’s why I love the Savvy line, you can do a quick less than 5 minute routine that gets you ready to go or you can dress it up, take a little longer, and look Friday night ready.

Ready to purchase? Click here, send me a message saying “I want that Makeup please!” and I will help you color match to get your very own set of Savvy Minerals!

I am also stoked that YL is coming out with a Lavender EO infused mascara this fall! Then my makeup routine will be completely chemical free! If you have any questions for me or would like to purchase some YL Savvy Minerals products please feel free to contact me! I hope you start ‘Ditching and Switching’ some of the chemicals in your makeup bag for a safer alternative!

Featured Oil of the Week – Thieves

For the LOVE of Thieves! This oil right here is why I got hooked on Essential Oils! Peppermint might have been my first love but Thieves is life. 100% die hard, head over heals, will never be without, hooked. Dead serious.

So, let’s get in to it! Let us start with the story of the name behind Thieves, because if you are unaware the name Thieves might throw you. But yes, it is Thieves like thief. Thief of my heart…. Okay that was lame. Moving on.

Rewind! Circa 15th century. The Black Plague is rampant.  Everyone around you is dying. Great fun right. There was a group of 4 thieves who took advantage of the situation. They were robbing the dead and not catching the black death! They were supposedly apothecaries that would arm themselves with a concoction of vinegar, herbs, and other spices in order to not catch the plague. The story varies based on the storyteller but the consensus is that one way or another (whether they offered to give up their recipe or the judge ordered them to give it up rather than be sentenced to death) they gave up the recipe. And Thieves EO is inspired by that recipe! If this story really interests you because 1. you like history or 2. you’d love to argue with me, there are a couple books that talk about these thieves that you could read. And no, I won’t argue with you. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about stories from hundreds of years ago.

No matter the version of the story, I LOVE Thieves EO in real present time!

Some of the amazing reasons why I love Thieves EO-

  • Diffuse Thieves solo in your cold water diffuser to scrub the air of your home. Do it often.
  • Dilute in carrier oil and apply to the bottoms of your feet to help support a healthy immune system. Bump it with some Oregano EO when seasons change is coming. Dilute more for children
  • Add one drop of Thieves Vitality* to a spoon full of Honey and stir into hot tea. Your throat will go ooohhh, aaaahhhhh (if you aren’t used to it, you might not enjoy the taste. It will be worth it though)
  • Add a few drops of Thieves Vitality to a capsule, fill the rest with carrier oil and take to help support healthy immunity (If you’re a seasoned oiller, do one drop sublingual, under your tongue)
  • Add a few drops in your dishwasher, especially when someone in your house is sicky

*The Vitality line with Young Living are Essential Oils labeled for dietary use.

Some of the other amazing Thieves Young Living products I cannot live without (I will do an entire Ditch and Switch post about these products in the future!)-

  • Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Thieves Hand Purifier
  • Thieves Toothpaste
  • Thieves Mouthwash
  • Thieves Foaming Hand Soap
  • Thieves Dish Soap
  • Thieves Fruit and Veggie Cleaner

I would have to say that Thieves EO and NingXia Red(a YL supplement) are the two health and wellness products that have made the biggest difference since starting my journey. I can feel the difference when I use them and especially when I don’t use them.

FriDiary – Cleansing with Essential Oils

Hello Again! FriDiary will be a regularly occurring post on this blog, although it won’t be every Friday. This Friday’s Diary will be about the cleanse I am currently doing! I am on a strict gluten free diet BUT just because someone is gluten free doesn’t necessarily mean they are healthy. And I have been slipping lately. Like eating bad food way too often. I’m human. But because of this I haven’t been feeling so hot. The worse I feel, the less I do yoga, and the worse I feel. It’s a vicious circle. So I decided to do a gentle cleanse with Young Living Cleansing Trio and essential oils. After all…..

“All Disease Starts in the Gut” – Hippocrates

There is more and more research coming out about how important gut health is. I guess Hippocrates knew what the heck he was talking about. The Cleansing Trio is geared towards gut health and stimulates your digestive system. I am in no way a gut expert. I have only begun research so please do not think I am claiming to be an expert here. Once I started reading about leaky gut that is when I decided I wanted to do a cleanse, especially because I have been failing on the food front lately.

The Cleansing Trio is a set of three supplements by Young Living that work well together: Comfortone, ICP, and Essentialzyme. Young Living states that this kit cleanses your system and eliminates waste.

I started off with Comfortone by taking one pill in the morning and one at night for two days and then increased to two pills morning and night. I did really well about staying on top of this! After about a week of this I added in ICP and started to drink it once a day (….except for the whole it was my birthday on a weekend and didn’t follow this at all…..oh well! It still has been working!) ICP is a powder that you add to water(or juice) and drink. It doesn’t taste great so I plug my nose and chug. It isn’t the worst and some people even like it. It is just very earthy. The packaging states to drink it right away after you mix it with liquid because if it sits too long it becomes thick. The goal is to keep taking the Comfortone and start drinking ICP 3 times a day….but I am horrible at structure. Even with me failing to drink it as often as it says I still am feeling a difference! At the same time that I started taking the ICP, I started taking Essentialzyme on an empty stomach about an hour before each meal. Except for breakfast because I eat right when I get up most of the time. They say taking this on an empty stomach is the most beneficial way to take it.

Throughout the entire process I have upped my water intake quite a bit. My goal is 88 fluid ounces a day. I haven’t been hitting my goal every day but I’ve been doing pretty good. When I am not doing a cleanse I shoot for about 60 ounces a day. The rule of thumb I follow is to drink at least half your body weight in ounces or more, every day. So, half your body weight and the drink that number in ounces every day. That in itself will start to cleanse your system. I have been adding Lemon EO to my water as well. And a few times throughout this cleanse I have taken a capsule with a couple drops of Peppermint EO.

So far I love this cleanse! It is much more gentle than some of the detoxes and cleanses that are out there(from what I hear, I haven’t ever done a major one). I didn’t feel low energy, like you might from only drinking juice. No hate on a juice cleanse, it just ins’t my style. Especially because I work full time and my metabolism is like a butter bullet. I don’t have time for that right now. I didn’t have any moments where I had a panicked rush to the restroom.  My stomach has definitely been making some crazy noises though. Essentially, it just got things moving and grooving and doing what they were supposed to already be doing! And I suck at following the rules and haven’t been as regular with it as I should be and it still is working! That is what I love about Young Living products- they work with your body and support your body systems. They don’t override your systems or block your neurotransmitters(many prescription drugs do this). They work in harmony with your body to help you naturally feel better. I’m sure if I was better about taking everything how I am supposed to it would work even better. I’m going to work on that for the last half of the cleanse and try to step it up. If you’re the kind of person that can follow structure then 1. this will work great for you and 2. I’m jealous. If you’ve been thinking about doing a cleanse I definitely recommend this one!

Disclaimer- I am not claiming that essential oils or these products treat or cure symptoms. I do believe they work in harmony with your body to support bodily systems naturally.

If you decide to try out this cleanse please read and follow the instructions per Young Living. If you are concerned at all I recommend contacting your doctor.

Featured Oil of the Week – Peppermint Essential Oil – My first love

Peppermint! The reason I jumped and got my Premium Starter Kit!

Rewind to over two years ago. I was hanging out with Anthony’s family and his sister and his mom opened up this tiny bottle and the most intense smell washed over me. Minty goodness. I had no idea what the heck it was and they explained to me what Essential Oils(EOs) were. Never had I even heard of Essential Oils before. Growing up in Prescott, Arizona I am honestly surprised I had never even heard of them. If you aren’t from Arizona, Prescott has a reputation for kind of being a hippie town. Anyways, I was super intrigued but way too apprehensive about smells because of my migraine history to give it a try. Then a few times later they talked me into trying it. I hadn’t ever gotten a migraine from them using it around me, they way I get migraines from scents most people use like perfume. They were using it to help ease their headaches and neck pain which is what I needed help with. I figured why not see if it helps even somewhat. So I put it on and it starts tingling. Like a lot. It was kind of intense. But I loved it. No way did it make my headache go away completely BUT I did feel some relief. It was almost like it relaxed me some and the intense tingling was distracting my mind from my pain.

Side note: I am not claiming peppermint essential oil cures migraines or neck pain. I am not a doctor and will never claim that essential oils cure or treat diseases or health problems. Essential oils support your body just like they support the health of a plant.

Peppermint is the reason that I decided to jump on the oil train and I am so glad I did! This was just the beginning and I found out all the amazing things EOs support my health and wellness with.

Some of the great uses for Peppermint Essential Oil:

  • Use topically to support happy and healthy muscles
    • add two drops peppermint eo, one drop wintergreen eo, and one drop lavender eo to a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage (This is great after a workout!)
  • Use Peppermint Vitality* as an all natural breath freshener
    • Usually, I just dab my finger on the outside of the dropper top of my bottle and then rub it on the inside of my bottom lip. Easy peasy breath freshener. Especially since I can’t chew gum because of the fake sugar!
  • Diffuse to create an uplifting and energizing aroma (great for studying or concentrating)
    • Add 3 or 4 drops to your cold water diffuser. Pairs great with citrus EOs and with Rosemary EO! A great morning wake up recipe is 3 drops peppermint, 2 drops rosemary, and 4 drops lemon
  • Use Peppermint Vitality to help support a healthy digestive system
    • put 2 drops peppermint in a capsule and top with 2 drops of carrier oil. The carrier oil I use for capsules is grape seed oil because it is safe to ingest. I keep a dropper bottle of it near my capsules for easy dropping.
  • Put one drop in your lip gloss to create an all natural lip plumper (not like the crazy chemical ones but a slightly more plump lip!)
  • Add Peppermint Vitality to your water or to your baking recipes (Hint- Peppermint Brownies)
  • Inhale if feeling yucky from a car ride
  • Use topically for bug bite relief
  • Create an air freshener without all those nasty chemicals to freshen your home or car
    • In a small spray bottle add either a tablespoon of witch hazle or a tablespoon of salt. Add 10 drops of peppermint. Top with water. Give a gentle swirl before spraying. Customize the scent with other EOs!
  • Peppermint is a key ingredient in PanAway®, AromaEase®, Aroma Siez™, Relieve It™, and Deep Relief™ Roll-On essential oil blends by Young Living
  • For all the yogis out there: peppermint eo is indicated for excess kapha, is cooling for pittas, and supports the movement of breath for vattas

*The Vitality line with Young Living are Essential Oils labeled for dietary use.

Much of the information within my essential oil posts I have learned in my course study with The School for Aromatic Studies and from personal usage.

Why I Started My Health and Wellness Journey

Hello there!

I started my journey to health and wellness about two years ago when I decided to get a Premium Starter Kit with Young Living. I was so excited when that box arrived and was so ready to start feeling better. I opened it up and those shiny 11 bottles were staring back at me. It was this moment that changed everything. From this moment on I started making real life changes.

I was only 21 years old but I was having regular migraines, was exhausted constantly, and the ringing in my ears and tremors in my hands were continually getting worse. Don’t take this the wrong way. I live and have lived an extremely blessed life. However, I felt I was too young to be living my life this way. My emotions were everywhere and I was pushing the most important people in my life away. My health was affecting my mental state. 22 years old should have been my prime time for going out and living my life but the last thing I wanted to do was stay out past 9pm.

At this same time I was so tired living how I was living I went to see a neurologist. He put me on meds for my migraines. What he didn’t tell me was the meds most people get put on for migraines, and the meds he put me on, were actually anti-depressants. What he did tell me was to slowly increase my dose until the migraines went away. He didn’t tell me to keep an eye out for potential mood swings or suicidal thoughts. But that is what happened. I was  all of a sudden having memory loss. Like missed three appointments I had made in a two week period. Never had I ever missed an appointment I had made in my entire life. When I told my mom that I didn’t know what was happening she looked up the meds the neurologist put me on and we found out it was an anti-depressant medication. I made an appointment to go back to the neurologist. Since I knew it was a serious thing to just go off anti-depressants, I didn’t do that, I made an appointment to go back instead. And guess what. I forgot the appointment…. I rescheduled and set a reminder in my phone AND told my mom so she could call me to help me get there on time.

I get there and tell him what has been happening. He, in a nonchalant way, says “Oh okay, we can try a different med that isn’t as strong. Different people react differently to these meds. I have some patients that are on 5 times the dose you are on in order to get rid of their migraines and they don’t have any side effects”. Okay get this. THIS is what this motherfucker tells me next…. “If you were on that kind of dose you’d be comatose.” What. The. Mother. Trucker. Comatose!  This is the med that he had me increasing my own dose until my migraines went away…. OKAY.

Sooooo I took control of my own life and decided to figure out what was actually causing my migraines instead of treating the symptoms. I cut out all sorts of foods and started a new diet on August 1, 2016. I cut out gluten, diary, soy, meat, and preservatives. For the most part I would call my diet “Pegan” or Paleo Vegan. I stuck to this diet strictly for 3 months. I was eating fish and veggies and some grains. And that’s basically it. It takes a full 120 days for gluten to completely get out of your system so the first month especially I was still having regular, killer migraines. For this reason I also did a slight digestive Essential Oil cleanse. They slowly started to dissipate over the days though. After about 8 weeks I was starting to feel better. A lot better. It was like coming up for air after you’ve been underwater for too long. The relief washes over you and you can literally feel it physiologically. I started adding foods back into my diet over time. To this day I don’t eat gluten. It absolutely gives me migraines so I just refuse to eat it.  No matter the stigma people may look at me with when I tell them I am gluten free and all they see a skinny chica on a ‘diet’. That’s their problem.

Then I found yoga. And it changed my life. 3 months after I fully committed to a regular yoga practice I signed up for a Yoga Teacher Training Program. I recently just completed my 200 hour training and am in the process of sending in my certification to Yoga Alliance.

I credit my quality of life to essential oils, food, and yoga. Health and wellness  isn’t just about your body. It is about your mentally and how you live your life. I decided to cut the crap and instead I say to life “NamastayOiled”. That is what I will be striving to share with you on this blog. And I can’t wait.
