Featured Oil of the Week: PanAway Essential Oil

PanAway essential oil is one of the more expensive essential oils but for good reason. This amazing essential oil is one that has a specific purpose and it does it’s job well.
PanAway Essential Oil isn’t like Lavender, the swiss army knife of essential oils. It has a more refined and specific use versus having many, many uses. That makes this EO a key bottle in your oil arsenal, that for most of us we will use regularly but maybe not every day. On the other hand, there are people out there that will be so grateful to have this essential oil to use it every single day to support their muscular and skeletal systems.
This super oil is best used topically, not aromatically. Topical application of essential oils is a great way to benefit from those oils. That is because your skin is your largest organ! You can read up on topical application of essential oils on my last blog post.
How to use your PanAway:
  • Achy Hands- Dilute 1-3 drops with a carrier oil and rub on trouble spots
  • Post Workout/Yoga Relief- Dilute 2-4 drops with a carrier and rub into sore areas OR add 4 drops to Epsom salt and pour into hot bath
  • Long day on your feet?
  • Cramps during a certain time of the month?
  • …you get the picture. Dilute this EO and apply where needed. Avoid sensitive skin.
  • For days when you need more support, ‘bump’ your PanAway with two drops of Copaiba Essential Oil
What EOs are in PanAway?
  • Wintergreen EO
  • Helichrysum EO (this super power EO is why this blend is so expensive)
  • Clove EO
  • Peppermint EO

My favorite way to use this essential oil is adding it to a hot bath! Then my whole body benefits from this powerful essential oil. Make sure you dilute this essential oil at first because it is a ‘Hot’ oil. It will have more of a cooling and tingling sensation than a hot sensation. My go to carrier oils are grape seed oil or coconut oil.

This essential oil is on the higher end of the price spectrum but that is because Helichrysum EO is in this blend. This EO on its own is expensive because “Tiny flowers mean tiny yields of essential oil. We steam distill the delicate blossoms of this plant, and while we don’t get much oil from each distillation, that oil has a rich and complex profile of the naturally occurring constituents neryl acetate, gamma-curcumene, and alpha-pinene” (Young Living Blog).

I hope this taught you more about this Young Living favorite! Oils 101- Topical Application of Essential Oils

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Did you also know we carry about 22 square feet of skin, which is about 8 lbs!! Why not put that organ to good work with our oils!

Your skin is the perfect place for application of essential oils! Keep reading to find out more about topical application of essential oils.

Essential oils are volatile substances, which means that they literally jump into the air! That is why when someone opens a bottle of Lavender essential oil across the room it isn’t long before you can smell it. When you put a drop of essential oil onto your skin it will do the same thing. In order to hold on to those essential oil molecules, and prevent them from jumping off your skin and into the air, we put them in a carrier oil or a thicker, fatty oil. Then it holds them to your skin and there is more of the essential oil for your skin to absorb.

So, let’s talk about carrier oils! This is one of those tools you want to make sure you have on hand. A carrier oil is simply a non-essential oil that is used to help with absorption and dilution of your essential oil of choice. It makes your oils last longer and in some ways work better (by giving them time to absorb into your skin rather than evaporating off). There is probably a 99% chance you have a carrier oil in your house RIGHT NOW, whether it is coconut, grapeseed, or olive oil, those can ALL be used for diluting!

Now you may be asking, why SHOULD I dilute? These powerful oils have super small molecules that are absorbed quickly and act fast. Some oils are known as “hot oils” which means they produce a cooling or warming sensation on the skin; these typically need to be diluted more to help with that. Examples of hot oils and blends include Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Exodus II™, and Thieves. For some people, Peppermint and Panaway’s cooling sensation can be too intense.

Bonus Tip: If you do feeling that burning sensation after applying a hot oil, don’t try to wash it off with water. Simply apply carrier oil directly to the site and you will get relief.

If you have kids it is especially important to dilute because their bodies are smaller and need less molecules of oil to get the desired effect.

Bonus Tip 2: If you get an essential oil in your eye for some reason, use a carrier oil and add a drop or two to your eye to dilute it! I know this sounds strange, but the carrier oil will trap the oil and help to flush it out. Oil and water don’t mix so using water will just have the essential oil floating all over your eyeball causing all sorts of trouble.

FUN FACT: Essential oils are tiny molecules. They are so small that they actually can pass through the blood brain barrier! This is why topical usage works with essential oils. The quote below is from Jen O’Sullivan. She has an awesome Facebook group and has published books about essential oils.

“The average human has been stated to have anywhere from 40 trillion cells to 100 trillion cells depending on their size and how they are weighed.

If we go with the smaller number you would actually get 4 million molecules per cell. So let’s stick with a larger person at 100 trillion. That number looks like this: 100,000,000,000,000 (1 with 14 zeros).

One drop of EO has been measured at around 40 million trillion molecules. That number looks like this: 40,000,000,000,000,000,000 (4 with 19 zeros).

Divide one into the other and you get 400,000. It takes 20 minutes for an essential oil to reach every cell in your body from the time you apply them.

This means every single cell in our body, in 20 minutes, is covered by 400,000 essential oil molecules. Incredible!”

That is just ONE DROP! That is why a little goes a long way.

Getting Started:

If you are brand new to using essential oils, put two drops of carrier oil in your palm and add two drops of your desired essential oil. This ratio is great for adults starting out. Once you start using essential oils more then for oils that aren’t hot oils, you can dilute less. Rub your palms together in a clockwise motion, then apply where needed. Do not put in eyes or ears.

Great places to apply your oils topically are:

  1. Bottoms of your feet
  2. On your stomach
  3. Wrists
  4. On your neck and chest
  5. On lymph node areas

Topically using essential oils is a great way to use your oils and will get the oils in your body. Don’t overthink it. Just start using them where you think you need them. Dilute more at first and then go from there. If you aren’t sure where to put the oils, then put them on the bottoms of your feet. This is the go slow and low rule.

I hope this post helps you realize how easy it can be to use essential oils and receive their benefits. Please refer to my blog post on essential oil safety to learn more.

Featured Oil of the Week: Stress Away

Stress Away is an interesting essential oil(EO) that comes with the Premium Starter Kit because you can use it all the time! Some EOs have specific uses and others can be used every day.
Stress Away is one you can use day and night! Use it for de-stressing and focusing during the day and for relaxing and supporting healthy sleep at night.
This can be confusing for some because it our modern world today a drug that we would use to focus during the day we would most definitely not want to take at night. And a drug we would take to sleep at night we wouldn’t take at noon. That is because drugs override our natural body systems and clog up our nerves. Literally. Most drugs work because they stop signals from going from one nerve to the next. It creates a block.
Essential oils are earth made, plant products that work WITH our body not against it.
An EO like Stress Away will help you sleep at night because your body is already producing melatonin. It won’t make you sleepy during the day when you use it to help you focus because there isn’t any melatonin in your system.
Some of the awesome uses for Stress Away EO:
  • Rub a couple drops (or put a roller top on your bottle) over heart, on wrists, forearm, and along jawline when…
    • the dog poops in the house
    • you have job interview nerves
    • you’re in rush hour traffic
    • your boss is making you crazy
    • it’s finals week
    • your kids draw with sharpie on the walls
    • …you get the picture!
  • Diffuse this essential oil to help with focus (I have a diffuser at my desk at work that I leave there!)
  • Diffuse while your kids are doing their school work
  • Rub 2 drops on the bottoms of your feet before bed to support better sleep
  • Temper tantrums? Terrible twos? Dilute 2 drops with carrier oil and apply to child’s stomach and forearms (make a roller specifically pre-diluted for your kids so you can grab it right away!)
  • if your kids are at an age where car rides suck and all they want to do is cry… clip a wooden clothespin to your vent, drop a couple drops of stress away on it, turn on the air, and boom- instant car diffuser
  • Add 5 drops to Epsom salt and add to a hot bath, relax and enjoy
What Essential Oils are in Stress Away EO?

I hope this blog post gave you some new ideas of how to use Stress Away or inspired you to start using essential oils!

Jump Start Your Meditation Practice with Essential Oils

If you’re in the yoga world, more than likely you have heard about essential oils. Whether you need a jump start or a new focus, essential oils can enhance your meditation practice in many ways. From grounding to uplifting, energizing to calming, there is an essential oil for that.

“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth: not going all the way, and not starting”. – Buddha

I have used many different essential oils and use them regularly in both my meditation and yoga practice. I find that they can help me refocus when I have hit a slump or can help me find specifically what I am seeking out of a practice. Outlined below are some of my favorites for common focuses in our practices.

Grounding:

I would recommend reaching for any of the tree essential oils if you want a grounding practice.

Fir, Blue Spruce, Geranium-  Put 2 drops of this combo on the bottoms of your feet diluted with carrier oil

Pine, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang- Put 2 drops of this combo on the bottoms of your feet diluted with carrier oil

Clary Sage- Diffuse 3 drops for grounding and to cleanse energies

Uplifting:

Any of the Citruses are a safe bet for an uplifting practice.

Grapefruit and Lemon- Diffuse 2 drops of each

Frankincense- Apply topically to temples, wrists, and neck diluted properly

Jade Lemon and Eucalyptus- A very special and yummy blend! Diffuse 2 drops of each

Energizing:

A good go to is always mixing citruses and herbs for energizing blends.

Lemon and Rosemary- Diffuse 3 drops of each

Marjoram- Apply topically to temples and wrists diluted properly with carrier oil

Calming:

Lavender is widely known to give a calming aroma. Here are some additional ideas.

Cedarwood and Lavender- Diffuse 2 drops of each

Orange and Patchouli- Diffuse or apply topically to bottoms of feet(dilute with carrier oil)

Vetiver and Tangerine- Diffuse or apply topically to bottoms of feet(dilute with carrier oil)

Yogi Tip- If you decide to put diluted essential oils on the bottoms of your feet, do it about 30 minutes before you start your practice. Give it some time to soak in, to not only allow the essential oils to enter your body but also so your feet don’t slip! Or use some yogi socks that help with grip on the days you want to put oils on your feet.

One of the amazing traits of essential oils is that they work synergistically with our bodies in a similar way to when they are in the plants they come from. No matter which ones you are using, if you are using high quality oils you trust and properly diluting any oils you put on your skin, then they are going to benefit you. Figure out which essential oils you like and then mix and match from there!

Thank you for reading and I hope you try out some of these combos! If you would like to read more about getting started with essential oils you can check this page out. AND subscribe to this blog so you never miss an essential oil tip!

Featured Oil of the Week: Frankincense

Frankincense! This amazing oil has so many wonderful properties and benefits that it is hard to live without. This essential oil is made from Frankincense trees in Northern Africa. They produce the oil from the resin that seeps from the trees.

This Essential Oil has a long history and was even given to the baby Jesus. I always think of Christmas because of this and figured this would be great time to tell you all about Frankincense Essential Oil! Using Essential Oils can help you live a healthier lifestyle. Start using essential oils like Frankincense every day to start living a life of wellness.

  1. Great for soothing and protecting your skin from the elements! This oil was beloved by old societies. It was known to be used by the wealthy for embalming purposes. For this same reason is why it is great for your skin! No matter your age, adding a drop of Frankincense to your moisturizer is well worth it. Read more in the side note below!
  2. Yogis- A grounding and spiritual oil to use during your yoga or meditation practice. Either diffuse or apply topically.
  3. Frankincense essential oil is great for calming. Drop two drops in your palms and rub them clockwise together, cup your palms over your nose and breathe deeply, then hold your palms over the back of your neck.
  4. Drop one drop under your tongue (also called sublingual) to help support a healthy immune system.
  5. Massage into desired area after an awesome asana practice or workout
  6. Apply Frankincense EO to any skin areas you would like a little extra help with
  7. Diffuse for an uplifting scent on a rainy day
Essential oils that go great with frankincense
  1. Copiaba EO – can be great for supporting a healthy skeletal system
  2. Lavender EO- calming and skin support
  3. Peppermint EO- can be very soothing for head tension
  4. Patchouli EO and Cedarwood EO- a great pair for yogis!
  5. Lemon EO- uplifting and amazing diffuser dou

Side note- Why do we add it to our moisturizer instead of just putting it directly onto the skin? Essential oils are volatile substances, which means that they literally jump into the air! That is why when someone opens a bottle of Lavender essential oil across the room it isn’t long before you can smell it. When you put a drop of essential oil onto your skin it will do the same thing. In order to hold on to those essential oil molecules, and prevent them from jumping off your skin and into the air, we put them in a carrier oil or a thicker, fatty oil. Then it holds them to your skin and there is more of the essential oil for your skin to absorb. We don’t want to be wasting precious Frankincense essential oil!

Frankincense EO is great for supporting your overall wellness! Pin the image above to save this blog post for future reading. Frankincense even comes in the Premium Starter Kit, which is crazy! This isn’t the cheapest oil but it is one of the most beloved essential oils. You can start using essential oils to live a life of wellness. Ditch and Switch: Toothpaste

Back at it again with another Ditch and Switch post. Here on this blog we prioritize what we put on our bodies and what products we use. I started this blog because it was so difficult to find all the answers I was looking for. I want this to be a place where you can come find answers. When you find out what is hiding in our home products, our skin care products, our cleaning products, our soaps…. the list goes on and on… once you find out what is really in these products, if you are anything like me, you won’t stop until you replace everything with sustainable, green, animal friendly, all natural, chemical free products. I am here to help you on that mission. Enter, Ditch and Switch.

This week we have, drum roll please….

Ditch: Traditional Toothpaste

Switch: Young Living Thieves All Natural Toothpaste

Why you should ditch-

Have you paid attention to what is in your toothpaste? You most likely know that there is Fluoride in your toothpaste. Your dentist has probably preached to you your entire life about the importance of Fluoride in your toothpaste. But you probably haven’t been told that Fluoride is a neurotoxin.

Poison control will even tell you that toothpaste is toxic and cause problems when ingested. But they follow up by telling you that it is safe to use as directed. What I don’t understand is why they aren’t concerned about this neurotoxin being absorbed through your skin.  Plus, side note, they don’t call it a neurotoxin on their website. Just saying.

Even though small amounts of fluoride in toothpaste, using as directed, won’t give you a fever, like it can if ingested, you are still absorbing small amounts of fluoride every day. This blog post by Ursa Major the explains this process extremely well and does so in a non-biased way. You not only are absorbing it through your skin, you are also swallowing small amounts everyday, even if you rinse well.

What is a neurotoxin? According to Encyclopedia Britannica the definition of a neurotoxin is… “Neurotoxin– substance that alters the structure or function of the nervous system.” “The substances include a wide range of natural and human-made chemical compounds, from snake venom and pesticides to ethyl alcoholheroin, and cocaine.”

“Neurotoxins are absorbed through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or injection and can have immediate or long-lasting impacts by causing neurons to malfunction or by disrupting interneuron communication. Slurred words or poor coordination due to toxic effects on neurons from alcohol consumption, for example, are temporary, whereas cognitive damage caused by lead exposure is irreversible. Certain neurotoxins are highly potent and have been developed into chemical weapons. The nerve agent sarin, for example, is an organophosphorous compound that is classified as a weapon of mass destruction; sarin gas can kill a person within 10 minutes of exposure.” – Encyclopedia Britannica

Essentially, a nuerotoxin affects your nervous system and could negatively affect you and your body in a number of ways….. No thanks.

Traditional toothpaste also has Triclosan in it. Triclosan has been reviewed by the FDA recently and they required the removal of Triclosan in soaps because “New data suggests that the systemic exposure to these active ingredients is higher than previously thought, and new information about the potential risks from systemic absorption and long-term exposure is now available” among other reasons. To read the new rule click here. However, they have not required that it be removed from toothpaste, read here. Three things jump out at me here: 1. Systemic Absorption, 2. Long-Term Exposure, and 3. They only required removal from soaps. These don’t add up for me. Why would it not be important to remove it from any body product? If you don’t think that systemic absorption and long term exporsure is a real risk with any product that has Triclosan in it, think again. This is just proof that we cannot rely on the FDA to keep consumers safe. Read more about Triclosan here.

There are many other reasons to switch from traditional toothpastes. One being that they train consumers with their commercials to think you need a lot of toothpaste. Consumers use more toothpaste and then consequently they make more money. I could go on but these are enough reason for me to ditch my traditional toothpaste.

switching to actual all natural toothpaste-

I have been using the Thieves Aromabright Toothpaste for over a year now and I love it! I am so grateful I found a company that I trust fully. I don’t need to second guess that they are sneaking some ingredient in, while still labeling it “Natural” or “Simple Ingredients”. One great resource for seeing false advertising is The Food Babe on Instagram. She mainly focuses on food false labeling and ingredients but many major body product companies do this as well.

Young Living’s Thieves Aromabright Toothpaste is actually made with ingredients that I trust including coconut oil and essential oils. Coconut oil is used by many people for oil pulling and is a great addition to the ingredient list. Plus, this toothpaste doesn’t have that weird after taste that many natural toothpastes have. Which by the way, read the ingredients on Tom’s toothpaste…  SLS is listed as an ingredient. And on some of their toothpastes sodium fluoride is listed as an ingredient. So much for their “natural” label.

The essential oils in the Aromabright toothpaste are:

  • Peppermint EO
  • Spearmint EO
  • Clove EO
  • Ocotea EO
  • Cinnamon EO
  • Lemon EO
  • Rosemary EO

All of these essential oils will help support a healthy mouth. Plus, they make the toothpaste taste amazing. You don’t even have to worry about swallowing it. What a concept.

If you are ready to make the switch, click here to get started with actual all natural Thieves products.

Thank you for reading and I hope this helps clear some things up about something many, many people use every single day. You can go your whole life without knowing something but the moment you learn, it is what you do with that knowledge that will make the difference in your life.

On this blog we talk about all things essential oils and yoga, plus a little more. Sharing the oil love is my passion, not just my job. If you are interested in using Essential Oils you can contact me with questions or check out this post. Or both!

Featured Oil of the Week: Tea Tree

A hoard worthy oil. I probably have at least 3 unopened bottles of Tea Tree because the idea of not having it is unacceptable to me. I love my Tea Tree Essential Oil(EO) and it is one of the oils I have on my person at all times. I use it for many reasons but there is one in particular that is the main cause of my emotional attachment.

Uses for Tea Tree essential oil:
  • Add one drop on top of your Thieves Aromabright toothpaste and brush away! Tea Tree is excellent at supporting gum, tooth, and mouth health. Do this about once a week in addition to your regular routine.
  • Use in a scalp rinse to promote a healthy scalp. Pour about 3 oz of witch hazel in the bottom of a small spray bottle and add 20 drops Tea Tree EO, 20 drops Rosemary EO, and 20 drops Cedarwood EO. Fill with water. Spray on scalp. Do not wash out. If you can leave it overnight!
  • Supports healthy skin! Use diluted to help keep your skin healthy, anywhere on your body.
  • Mix with Beeswax and Lemon EO to create your own cuticle cream! Or for a liquid, use sweet almond carrier oil instead.
  • Fall changing of weather- Apply two drops of Tea Tree EO and one drop of Oregano EO in a palm full of coconut oil and apply to the bottoms of your feet to help support a healthy immune system. Put socks on to keep it in place!
  • Diffuse to scrub the air and help you breathe cleaner
  • Drop two drops in your laundry to give it a boost, perhaps when you wash the dog bed or wash sheets after someone has been sick
  • Clean mold in your home/shower/etc by ‘bumping’ your Thieves cleaner with Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • FAVORITE USE for Tea Tree EO: Dab under my nose to prevent smells like perfumes from entering my nose. This may seem strange but for me it works and I know of others who have used it successfully this way. That is how I learned about it. I am extremely sensitive to smells. That may seem counter-intuitive to the fact I’m telling you I dab Tea Tree EO right under my nose because Tea Tree is a hella strong smelling oil. BUT Essential Oils are natural and don’t give me migraines. Fake smells that have synthetic perfumes and smells in them give me some of the worst migraines I get. I can smell that lady three isles down who can no longer smell her own perfume so she sprays 5 sprays so she can, okay. I hate it. Now that I have my oils, when I smell anything synthetic I rip out my Tea Tree as fast as I can and put it under my nose. I always, always have Tea Tree on me at all times.
  • Second Favorite Use: It goes in my all natural deodorant recipe! Don’t worry I will be sharing my recipe on here soon. Subscribe so you don’t miss it!

Thank you for reading! On this blog we talk about all things essential oils and yoga, plus a little more. Sharing the oil love is my passion, not just my job. If you are interested in using Essential Oils you can contact me with questions or check out this post. Or both!

Depending on the diffuser you pick, you will spend less than 180 bucks total. You get everything mentioned above and a membership with Young Living with no commitments.

The membership with Young Living gets you wholesale pricing without having to commit to purchasing anything further. You can order your kit, be a member, and never order again. Even though you have zero commitment to order again, you most definitely will  but it will be because you love your oils and how they are changing your life. When you do order again, you will pay the wholesale cost.

Zero commitment membership + wholesale pricing = newfound health and wellness.

The Premium Starter Kit is the way to go or I wouldn’t recommend it. All my peeps get started this way and not one has regretted it. I love my job because instead of selling a product just to make a living, I am spreading health and wellness to my NamastayOiled community. Are you ready to start using essential oils? You’re worth it and so are the oils.

A Note on the Vitality Line

The Vitality line with Young Living are Essential Oils labeled for dietary use. They are the bottles above with the white labels. Young Living came out with this line because the FDA regulated that essential oil companies cannot put Aromatic, Topical, and Internal uses on the same label. That is when the vitality line was born. All vitality oils through Young Living are labeled for internal use. You can put these oils in your water, Lemon EO yes please! You can use these oils in cooking or they can be taken in a capsule.

Please, please read your label if you do not use Young Living. Not all oils are created equal and many state on the label do not consume or for external use only. Others even state not for topical use! Yikes. For more on this topic check out this blog post here and scroll down to Essential Oil grades.
